By Simon Ebegbulem BENIN—A 60-year-old widow, Madam Helen Odiazor, whose son was killed on his way home on hearing about his father’s death, has called on the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Babatunde Kokumo, to investigate the circumstance of his death.
The deceased, identified as Melody, a tipper-lorry driver, was said to have been shot two weeks ago alongside two other boys and their bodies displayed at the St. Saviour Police Station in Benin. The deceased’s mother, who wept at the Police Command yesterday, lamented losing her son few hours after she was informed of her husband’s death at the hospital. She stated that her son was on his way home on hearing of his father’s death when he was shot by vigilante men at St. Saviour “when he was not an armed robber.” The deceased’s sister, Rachel, said policemen told the family his brother was not dead, but was being treated for gunshot injuries, adding that the Police had refused to disclose the hospital where the brother was kept. However, the Police boss, Kokumo, said all parties have been invited for a meeting, saying “the impression given to the Police was that a vigilante group had an encounter with robbers, but now we have information about the incident and we are going to find out the truth.”
